Minutes of the preliminary meetings, 1875 Jul-Aug.

Holograph manuscript minutes kept by John S. Collins, secretary of the Sioux Commission, recording the preliminary meetings between the Sioux Indian Commission and various Sioux chiefs. These meetings were held at agencies in Dakota and Nebraska in the summer of 1875, preceding the negotiations in September. The entries record the dialogues between formal Sioux leaders, including Red Cloud and Spotted Tail, and the commissioners regarding the Black Hills and the upcoming treaty discussions.

Red Cloud was born close to the forks of the Platte River, near the modern-day city of North Platte, Nebraska. His mother, Walks as She Thinks, was an Oglala Lakota and his father, Lone Man, was a Brulé Lakota leader. They came from two of the seven major Lakota divisions. The Sioux Indian Commission was established in June 1875 to negotiate a new treaty with the Sioux Indians concerning their rights to the Black Hills, where gold had been discovered, and which the United States Government wanted to acquire.
